If you have a smaller computer screen or you have decided you don't have much need for the sidebar's gadgets (we'd be interested to hear why) you can easily hide the sidebar with one click.

At the top of each page is a Hide Sidebar button (see screenshot on the right.) Clicking this once with the left mouse button will hide the sidebar.
This means the page's content will expand to become a wider column (see below.) This setting is saved in a browser cookie (see below) so that you don't have to click this button on every page, it will remember that you have chosen to hide the sidebar.
If you want to show the sidebar again, you will see the button has become Show Sidebar. Click this and the content will narrow down and the sidebar will re-appear. Like hiding the sidebar, this choice will be remembered.
A page with the sidebar hidden
A cookie is a tiny little file kept on your computer. This cookie is not sent to the council or stored at the council, it is private. Cookies are a way of web sites being able to store bits of information about your visit that it can recall when you visit again. In this case, the council website makes a little cookie that says whether the sidebar should be hidden or not. Without cookies, you would have to click the Hide Sidebar button on every page and that could become irritating.
