On May 19th 2008, we finally launched our brand new website. It does work a bit differently from the old one and through working with local people and revising and refining our ideas over an eleven month period, the result is has been received as a very positive step forward.
Why have we done this? The old website not only looked very old fashioned, but was also not the best to use. In fact it was pretty difficult and whilst we still have a lot of work to do, we now have a very solid foundation to build on. The above screen-grab shows you five key areas of the new Worthing Borough Council homepage. They are:
You Are Here: If you ever need to know where you are on our website, this is your friend. The current link is always highlighted in bold and yellow. Use this to move backwards through the sections and to get back to the homepage.
Tip: You can also click on the Worthing Borough Council logo to jump back to the homepage on any page of this website.
- Navigate: On the homepage this contains the main sections of the website. By selecting one of the links, you will be taken into that section.
- Search and A to Z: Our search and A to Z Index facility is always at the top right hand corner of the website, including the homepage. If you are looking for something specific, use our A to Z Index, if it's not there or you're looking for something with a wider requirement you can use our search engine to pull out useful results.
Did you know: Our search engine uses Semaphore's Smartlogik which is consistently rated as a Very Good search engine on local government websites. It's pretty good! Our A to Z is always improving too, so please try to use this and if we're missing something and you couldn't find it, let us know, we're here to improve our service and help you.
- Sidebar and Gadgets: This is one of the most innovative parts of our website that will really blossom in the coming months, but it's already useful. You can easily use this without changing a thing to show your current recyling, refuse and garden waste collection day (just enter your street), the current weather and forecast for Worthing, local news, job vacancies and local events and also a route planner to common locations in Worthing. All without needing to set anything up or log in! Find out more in our Customise Your Pages guide.
Tip: If you need something more than what's currently at the top of the page, move your mouse over the gadget's title, and click and drag to move it up the sidebar so it's where you want it.
Tip 2: Set you home's or business' street in the Recycling and Refuse Days gadget so you always know when your bins are emptied. You don't even need to log in, it just remembers what you have typed in last time!
- A View of Worthing: There was always one consistent request, more pictures! More photos! We're working on this but we also thought so many of you also have great photos of Worthing, and you deserve a chance to have them shown on our website.
We went one step further and allowed you to 'exhibit' on the homepage, this is after all Your Council. Every fortnight we choose a favourite submission and show it on the homepage plus its own dedicated page in full. We also will be archiving the photos so we can build up a magnificent catalogue of photos of our town.
