Blue Starfish Club event needs volunteers

The popular Blue Starfish Club for adults with learning disabilities returns to Worthing on 11 February at the Assembly Hall and needs volunteers to help out. On Thursday 28 January 2010 there’s a free volunteer awareness training event for anybody that would like to help with the organisation of the club nights. This club night features live music from Beat Express, Fuzzbomb Band and Pines Dance Group and will have a Valentines theme.

To be successful and to make sure the clubbers have a great time involves a large workforce of volunteers.  No previous experience of managing music events or working with people with a disability is necessary.

The Blue Starfish Club events are organised in partnership with Worthing Borough Council and West Sussex Arts Partnership and Worthing Mencap.

The training session, with refreshments is free and takes place at Buddy’s Café, South Farm Road, Worthing from 7pm to 9pm.  People who come along to the training are under no obligation to become involved in future Blue Starfish Club events.

Adur and Worthing councils’ leisure development officer (Community Sport) Annabelle Trent said:

“Understandably some people might be wary of volunteering because they are unsure about what is involved and so the awareness training event will explain the role of the helpers and provide an insight into the needs of people with learning disabilities
“Everybody who helps at the Club Nights enjoys them and the satisfaction of making a difference gives a real buzz to the whole experience. “

There will also be a chance for the clubbers to have their say about what they enjoy and the future of the Club Nights by visiting the VIDOCU pod, which is an amazing interactive consultation device.

Anybody wanting more information about the Volunteer Awareness Training session should call Annabelle Trent on 01273 263347 or email Annabelle.trent@adur.gov.uk.
