Mayor Heather in the ‘Shade’ for Guide Dogs - Photocall Opportunity

Released: 11 Jun 2007

Worthing Mayor Heather Mercer is asking you all to have fun in the sun this summer by putting on your sunglasses and taking part in Guide Dogs’ Shades Day campaign starting on Friday 29 June.

Heather along with fellow Councillors, staff and local guide dog owner Fred Paul will be amongst thousands of people nationwide who will wear their sunglasses at work, school, in the pub - anywhere and everywhere really! - making a donation to The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, whilst raising awareness of eye health.

Heather says:

"It would be really great if as many of you as possible could come along and join me on the Town Hall steps at 2pm on the 29th June. Lets see if we can make it the biggest photocall for Shades Day yet!"

If you want to do your bit for the Guide Dog appeal you can get a fundraising and information pack with lots of ideas to make your event go with a swing.  You can also learn more about eye health by visiting www.shadesday.org.uk or call 0845 606 6298.

Guide Dogs is committed to investing in research into the causes and prevention of sight loss.

“Funding research into eye diseases is essential to understand the causes of blindness, and how to prevent this,”

explains Tom Pey, Guide Dogs’ Director of Policy and Development,

“Shades Day is an ideal opportunity to think about eye care. Good sunglasses protect the eyes from damaging UV sunlight which can contribute to macular degeneration and cataracts. Your shades don’t have to be the most expensive: experts recommend wraparound sunglasses marked “Type 2” and with a CE symbol. So there’s really no excuse for not donning your shades and raising money for Guide Dogs!”

Photocall opportunity

To photograph the Mayor of Worthing, Councillors and staff and local guide dog owner Fred Paul with guide Labrador dog ‘Oates’ please come along to the steps in front of the Worthing Town Hall at 2pm on Friday 29 June 2007.
