Worthing gets the thumbs up from Government Watchdog
Released: 20 Jun 2007
The Audit Commission
has told Worthing Borough Council in its annual inspection letter the council
has:
- Made
progress in all of its priority areas, particularly in agreeing the Masterplan
for the town and seafront
- Maintained high performance
- Improved its arrangements for the use
of resources
- Following
the appointment of an Interim Chief Executive, improved the way staff are led
and managed.
Every year the
council is audited on its performance and financial processes. This year’s report highlights how well the
council has progressed and how well it has managed its finances. Worthing’s performance is good and has
improved slightly faster than at other district councils. Out of the basket of performance indicators
selected by the Audit Commission, 44% of Worthing’s are in the top quartile
nationally, way above the district council average. Crime statistics in particular are good and
among the lowest 25% of councils nationally.
The work the council
is doing with Adur District Council to move towards delivering more shared
services is seen as innovative. And the
joint purchasing of the refuse and recycling fleet ready to launch the new
wheelie bin service for both Worthing and Adur in phases over the next two
years is also praised.
Cabinet Member for
Resources, Paul Yallop, said:
“This is a very positive report and shows
how far the council has moved on over the past year. Performance is really strong and value for
money, with the lowest average council tax in the county, has been
maintained. I was particularly pleased
to see that the Audit Commission has recognised two areas of notable practice
by Worthing - our performance management framework and the quality of working
papers for our financial statements - which will be placed on the Commission’s
national database as examples of good practice.”
