This year the Worthing and District Allotments and Gardens Association joined forces with the Council to run the popular Allotment Class in the annual Worthing in Bloom competition for 2007, which attracted more entrants and a healthier prize fund.
Terry Edwards, Chairman of the Worthing and District Allotments and Gardens Association, says:
Paul High, Cabinet Member for Culture Leisure and Sport, says:"Allotments are really taking off in a big way. Allotment holders benefit from all the exercise involved in digging and hoeing and the result of all this hard work can be barrow-loads of fresh, organic, tasty vegetables and fruits, that haven’t been sprayed with chemicals." He adds: "It doesn’t get much more local than this for keeping down the food miles."
"I am thrilled once again to see that the number of entries is up on last year. It just goes to show how popular allotments are."
Six allotment holders stood out for having plots that were diverse, environmentally aware and extra tidy. The judges from the association, Terry Edwards and Peter Everett, had great difficulty in deciding the overall winner as the standard was very high.

The rest of the Worthing in Bloom Competition categories will be judged at the end of July.
