Free 'Petanque' for all

Released: 29 Jun 2007

A series of three free taster sessions are being run Worthing Petanque Club to teach people how to play the game of petanque. . The sessions, supported by the Council, are being offered to anyone aged 8 upwards at Field Place on Saturday, 14 July from 2pm to 4pm, Friday, 20 July from 6.00 – 7.30pm and Saturday, 18 August from 2pm-4pm.

Ideally participants should come along to all three sessions as the first one offers expert tuition, the second puts it all into practice and the last offers a small competition with the winner being awarded a free membership of the club for this year. But anyone can just drop into any session.

Petanque is a sport that all ages can play. The idea of the game is similar to bowls, i.e. rolling your boule closer to the jack than your opponent . However, instead of rolling wooden bowls over a lawn, petanque is played on an easily maintained area of fairly level ‘stony’ ground, with metal boules rolled or tossed to the jack.

Paul High, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, says:

"We are pleased to support the Worthing Petanque Club in helping to promote a sport which appeals to such a wide range of ages and abilities and meets our aims of providing activities to the wider community."
