Big, Branded and Beautiful

Released: 14 Sep 2007

The first phase of the new multi-million pound recycling and refuse service starts in the north west of Worthing on Monday 17th September.

This investment, aimed at increasing recycling and making less household waste, was launched by Adur and Worthing Council Services last Tuesday 11 September.

Adur & Worthing Council Services' Staff with New Vehicle and Wheelie Bins

Sir Simon Milton, Chairman of the Local Government Association, who was visiting Worthing and Adur for the first time, came along to endorse the launch of the joint operation. He said that it was a unique example of how councils could work together to produce better services for less cost and would act as a blue-print for other councils in the UK. He said the joint service was a bold and innovative project and wished it the very best of luck.

Residents will have two wheelie bins, one for waste, - collected weekly and one for recycling - collected fortnightly.  People who want to recycle more can ask for a bigger wheelie bin. The new service will be phased- in over two years finishing in Worthing by December 2009.

The two councils re branded the joint service with a striking new livery.  Leaflets were delivered to every home in the first phase area explaining how the recycling and waste service, using wheelie bins for the first time, will work.

A big bonus for keen gardeners in the phase one area will be the new garden waste service.  For £50 a year people can hire a wheelie bin and have their garden waste collected every week.

The Councils’ recycling teams have been out in the Durrington, High Salvington and Offington areas with their  road-show advising residents what they can recycle and how the new service will work.

A cake was cut by the Mayor of Worthing

Adur District Council Leader, Neil Parkin said:

"We are delighted to see this service being launched.  We listened to what our residents told us they wanted, which was to have refuse collected weekly and to promote more recycling."

Worthing Borough Council Leader, Keith Mercer said:

"As Neil quite rightly says we need to get people recycling more of their household waste.  Nearly 1,000 of you in the phase 1 area have signed up for a green waste wheelie bin which already shows how keen we are to get recycling. Once the other 3 phases have been rolled out there will be no excuse for everyone to recycle as much as possible."

In the meantime the remainder of Adur and Worthing’s residents will continue to have their rubbish and recycling collected using existing arrangements on a weekly basis.  Both Worthing and Adur residents will get their own wheelies over the coming months. Details about when and how the next phases will be rolled out will given to residents nearer the time.
