Worthing crime falling

Released: 06 Nov 2008

Crime has fallen significantly in Worthing this summer compared to 2007.  A strong alliance between Sussex Police, Worthing Borough Council and their partners’ has contributed to this, under what is known as the Worthing Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.

Recorded incidents between the beginning of July and the end of September have shown some staggering reductions (compared to the same period in 2007), including:

  • Public Place Violent CrimeDOWN 36 percent - the majority of these incidents are relatively low-level, non-serious incidents.  Worthing is well below average for serious incidents
  • Burglary from homes – DOWN 40 percent- Sussex Police have been targeting Prolific and Priority Offenders to reduce this crime, resulting in 26 less crimes for this period;
  • Criminal Damage (Vandalism) – DOWN 16 percent - this has been down to a number of factors, including a more targeted approach to areas of concern, a focus on environmental crime issues and repeat offenders.  This has resulted in 91 less offences during this period.

Partners are committed to sustain this work and have a full programme ahead focusing on hotspot areas, individuals of concern and the Christmas and New Year period.

Work around Anti-Social Behaviour continues to be the number one priority.  The Council’s ASB Team are currently working on more than 80 cases across the Borough to help alleviate some of the issues within local communities.

Dep Leader/CabMemb for Regeneration , said:

“Worthing is already a relatively safe place and these reductions are yet more positive news.  The Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership has been working hard to tackle those issues that matter to the local community and these results demonstrate how well this partnership is working.   There are many challenges ahead and we will continue to develop and drive this work”

Sussex Police District Commander, Howard Hodges, said:

"The significant reductions that we have seen in crime here in Worthing mean that our town will continue to be a safe place to live, work and visit. These reductions have been achieved through close partnership working and the delivery of meaningful, neighbourhood policing.

Sustainable solutions are being found to the issues that matter most to local people who, through their Neighbourhood Panels, are able to shape the provision of local policing and hold their local officers to account.

I am proud of the achievements that we have made here in Worthing and am committed to building further upon these successes"
