Housing benefit fraudster gets 12 month Community Order

22 year old Stella Louise Muttitt of Rowlands Road, Worthing, appeared at Worthing & District Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 28th April 2010 summoned for one offence under the Social Security Administration Act 1992 of dishonestly furnishing a false document to obtain benefit.

The circumstances of the offence are that she declared to the Council that she had not received three Housing Benefit payment cheques, totalling £664.29 and requesting duplicate payment.

Enquires by the Council's Corporate Investigation Team revealed that she had in fact cashed the original cheques herself on three occasions at a 'cash convertor' shop (The Money Shop) in Rowlands Road.

She pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to a Community Order for 12 months with a requirement for 80 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £100 contribution to the Prosecution costs.

Dave Barrow, Corporate Fraud Manager, said:

“Please be assured that we will check and make enquiries of any alleged non-receipt of any housing benefit cheques or payments.”
