New neighbourhood panels set to tackle local issues

Released: 17 Jun 2008

Worthing residents can soon bring issues of concern to their area Neighbourhood Panel in a new initiative with Sussex Police to engage more effectively with local neighbourhoods.

Panels will have up to 15 residents from the local area, including councillors, representatives from businesses, and the youth and older generation sectors, and will work very closely with existing local groups operating in the area.

The panels will meet on a regular basis and work to identify 3 priority issues for their area. Crime and disorder information will be fed into the panels and any outcome and priorities reported back to the Worthing Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) Worthing Action Group, which includes the Police, Borough Council and other stakeholders.

Cabinet Member for Health, Safety and Wellbeing, John Rogers, says:

"Neighbourhood Panels are about engaging with local communities and identifying concerns. Issues raised here will be considered by a wide range of partners on a regular basis and will be used to inform the work of the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. This represents a major shift in policy by focusing on those issues that matter to local communities.

Getting closer and listening to the local community is at the heart of this approach and we are fully committed to supporting the development of this work."

Chief Inspector, Sharon Rowe, adds:

"This initiative formalises the very real contact and engagement that your local police already have at the Ward level. Neighbourhood Panels leading to neighbourhood priority setting which addresses local people's concerns is why we are here and how we should be delivering your service. I look forward to listening to your community safety issues and working in partnership to resolve them."

Details of how residents can get involved in these panels will be released soon.
