Former Mayor of Worthing for 2007/ 2008, Councillor Dr. Heather Mercer, raised a magnificent £40,692. for her three charities - Marie Curie Cancer Care, The Food Bank and the Thursday Club at the Salvation Army, during her busy year of office in which she covered 610 engagements.
A wide range of fundraising took place including the ever popular charity swimarathon which this year raised a record £10,500, the Brain Game, a Festival of Brass Concert, a Casino Royale evening, an art exhibition, a fashion show, the Food Bank Feast, a charity film night, wrestling, charity dinners, a tug of war, the list is endless!
Heather says:
"I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to raising this tremendous sum of money. I had the best charity team ever under the energetic leadership of Sharon Miller. I think that our success was based on the decision not to ‘make the most money’ but to ensure that people attending the events enjoyed themselves as well as donating to the charities. Without the support of leading hoteliers and restaurateurs who allowed us to use their premises and subsidised the food costs we would not have reached this target.
“There have been other unexpected but exciting spin offs from fund raising too. ‘Curves’ in Broadwater have promised to donate food twice a year that will provide ongoing support to the Food Bank.
“The charities have targeted where the money will go. Marie Curie Cancer Care will be able to provide many extra hours of nursing care in peoples homes as a result of our fundraising. The Food Bank will employ a member of staff to distribute the food, as the demand for food is increasing as the credit crunch begins to impact on peoples lives. The Thursday Club have bought new disco equipment to replace the very aged and virtually obsolete equipment they have been using. To see the young people energetically dancing to disco music is a wonderful sight.
“I would like to say a final thank you to everyone who gave so willingly of time, money and expertise. I could not have done it without you all and the charities would not have benefited as much as they have.”
