Tackling distraction burglary in Worthing

Released: 22 Aug 2008

Distracting an older person at the door then robbing them is a despicable crime and Worthing’s Crime and Disorder Partnership (CDRP) is taking action to stamp it out.

A new pilot project is being launched to help professional and voluntary organisations, who work with older people, identify those at risk of becoming a victim of distraction burglary.

The CDRP has created an information pack which gives advice and guidance on what to look for and what to do for those people considered at risk.  It also contains advice on prevention.  The pack is being distributed to a wide range of agencies and organisations who work with older people in their homes and outside.

Once a referral is received measures will include:

  • a visit from Sussex Police,
  • a careline alarm installed
  • More security in the home
  • a fire alarm and smoke detectors.

Detective Inspector Rob Walker said:

“Sussex Police are delighted to be working so closely with partners.  For everyone reading this please remember if you don’t know a caller at your house or flat do not let them in. Genuine callers will not mind you checking to ensure they are from the company they purport to be from. If in any doubt do not let them in, contact a neighbour and call the Police. We take these reports seriously”.

Worthing Borough Council’s cabinet member for health, safety and wellbeing, John Rodgers said:

“This is a good example of how working with others we can get projects off the ground which will have a real impact on local people".
