Revised plan for West Durrington ‘saves’ 200 trees

Released: 26 Aug 2008

A revised outline planning application for up to 875 new homes and community facilities in West Durrington has been lodged with Worthing Borough Council planners.

West Durrington - Revised Plan 2008
West Durrington Consortium - New Plan

The original planning application submitted by the West Durrington Consortium  in 2003, was controversial, particularly in relation to the proposed straightening of Titnore Lane, which would have resulted in the loss of 275 trees. The Consortium’s new plan will reduce the level of tree loss by 200 and see 2,350 new trees planted across the 40.14 hectare site.

The revised application now proposes implementing speed management measures rather than straightening Titnore Lane and replaces the previously proposed roundabout with a standard “T” junction.  The plan recommends speed limits of 20mph within the new housing areas and an extension of existing bus services. There would also be an integrated road and footpath system.

As well as a mix of residential dwellings, the vision for the proposed development would include a neighbourhood square, central green, medical centre, sports fields, community centre, shop and a new school.  Provision for public art is also included.

Over 1,800 letters are being sent to residents and businesses in the area by Worthing Borough Council as part of their consultation on the revised plan.  It is anticipated that the planning application would be considered by the Council’s Development Control Committee towards the end of the year.

Inspecting the Application

Te application can be inspected at the Planning Services Section, Portland House, Richmond Road, Worthing, between 9am and 5pm Monday to Thursday and 9am and 4pm on Friday.
