New Fitness Class for Maybridge

Released: 04 Sep 2008

Autumn is often a time when people become more inactive as the nights draw in and the weather becomes colder and bleaker. Yet the effect on mood and wellbeing of regular exercise makes it more important to be active at this time of year than at any other period.

When the new Maybridge Children and Family Centre opened in April many of those canvassed about what services they would like expressed a desire for an adult fitness programme. As a result Worthing and West Sussex Councils have organised a weekly keep fit programme that will start on 19th September. Each session will be held on a Friday from 09.30 to 10.15 a.m. They will be suitable for all standards of fitness as each individual will be able to work at his or her own pace. The sessions are based on Worthing Leisure Centre’s popular Legs, Bums and Tums programme and involve aerobic exercise as well as floor work.

Worthing Council is providing the instructor through Worthing Leisure Centre’s Fit4 Outreach initiative along with publicity material whilst West Sussex Council is providing the venue and managing the project. The consequence of this partnership is that the sessions can be offered at a below market price that should enable low income families living in the neighbourhood of the centre to take part. The aim is to build the sessions up to the point where they are self sufficient and can be sustained over the long term.

“We are placing greater emphasis these days on working in local neighbourhoods as part of our commitment to developing community wellbeing”,

comments Councillor John Rogers, Cabinet Member for Health, Safety and Wellbeing.

“The opportunity to work with the County Council on a project that encourages people from the Maybridge area to be more active is most welcome. The health benefits of exercise are well documented but what is often overlooked is that joining in with a group is fun and develops friendships, both of which are as important to a person’s wellbeing.”
