Shopmobility Scheme

Shopmobility is a registered charity (no. 1053250) working in partnership with GBL, the wheelchair warehouse to give independent advice on disability living aids. It provides a range of mobility equipment to hire or buy including manual and powered wheelchairs as well as scooters to anyone with a mobility problem as a result of permanent or temporary disablement, age, accident or illness. The service is available for use by both elderly and young alike.

Shopmobility works with Dial-a-Ride in various areas and aims to provide a new freedom and more independence to anyone experiencing a mobility problem and offers an easier way for you to go about your shopping trip or other business.

You do not have to be registered disabled, belong to the blue card scheme or be a resident of Worthing to become a member or borrow a vehicle .

Where is Shopmobility based ?

Shopmobility is located at 12-14 Liverpool Gardens in the Montague Centre Car Park. There are 7 disabled parking bays adjacent to the building, available exclusively for the use of Shopmobility. Further disabled bays are available in the car park.

When can the Scheme be used ?

The scheme is open from Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 4.30pm (closed for lunch 12.30 - 1.30pm) and Saturday between 10.00 - 3.30pm, when you may borrow a wheelchair or scooter for up to a day - depending on how busy the scheme is. Shopmobility has a range of equipment available including manual wheelchairs, 3 & 4 wheeled powered scooters and powered wheelchairs able to cope with a range of weights from 9 - 40 stone. There is a tea & coffee refreshment area available for scheme users.

How do you join the Shopmobility Scheme

  • Complete a simple registration form at the Shopmobility Centre during opening hours and provide proof of your identity.
  • Learn how to use the equipment best suited to your need. (This only takes a few minutes, as the equipment is safe and simple to use).
  • A membership card and number will be given to you on completion of registration.

How much does the Scheme cost ?

Casual use of the scheme is unrestricted and requires only proof of your identity and a returnable deposit. Fees start at £1.00 a day. If you live in Sussex you can become a Member for an annual fee of £52.00. Use is then free of charge.

How do you book a vehicle ?

Call in person or telephone one of the friendly team of volunteers and staff. When the Centre is closed your request can be left on the centre's answering machine, please speak slowly, leaving your name and telephone number. You assume the vehicle you require is available unless you are contacted by the Scheme

Worthing Shopmobility is an independent Registered Charity. It is governed by a Management Committee with a Senior Manager assisted by volunteers. You can also assist the Scheme in its operation in the following ways:

  • You could help by becoming, or inviting your friends to become, Friends of Worthing Shopmobility, which would require a minimum donation to the Scheme of £10.00.
  • By assisting with fund-raising activities as part of the fund-raising team,or by supporting fund-raising events.
  • By remembering the scheme when you consider making or adjusting your will.
