Strong and active voluntary and community groups make a vital contribution to our quality of life. They often address profound social problems including disadvantage and exclusion, and help reduce inequalities in areas of deprivation. From large national charities such as Save the Children and St John Ambulance, to residents associations and self-help groups, voluntary and community action touches the lives of every citizen as service users, volunteers and donors.

Additionally, Voluntary and community groups help to build ‘social capital’ – the invisible glue which binds us together and gives us a sense of community – and a sense of community ownership;

They give people a means to address issues which concern them, either through taking action themselves or by lobbying others to do so; and

They provide a vehicle for self-expression, collective action and philanthropy.
