The Government's Crime Reduction Strategy states that the aim for CDRPs is to 'reduce violent crime and fear of violent crime and protect individuals and communities'

Definition

Violent crime, as recorded by the Police, includes robbery, sexual offences and 'violence against the person' offences such as assault and murder.

  • According to the British Crime Survey (BCS) 2003/04 4.1% of people had experienced a violent incident, half of which resulted in no injury.
  • The number of violent incidents has fallen by 36% since a peak in 1995, and has levelled off.

Nationally, the most likely victims of violent crime are young men aged between 16-24 years old.
