Domestic Violence

Definition

Any incident of threatening behaviour violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are, or who have been intimate partners, or family members, regardless of gender.

Performance Target

To reduce incidents of repeat victimisation by 2008 (target to be established in year one of the 2005-2008 Community Safety Strategy.

The British Crime Survey states that the most prevalent group of repeat victims are those that experience domestic violence, hence the reduction target. Whilst local data does not provide any information on the percentage of repeat victims, we have a wide breath of anecdotal information that many of the victims seeking help have done so as a result of a number of repeat incidents. National information and research support this.

The Picture for Worthing

Worthing CDRP has already implemented a number of actions to address Domestic Violence. These include:

  • Raising awareness of domestic violence and key services for victims.
  • Develop targeted work for those victims most at risk.
  • Continue to work with and support the Worth Project and the Women's Aid refuge as key services for victims.

Example of a Worthing CDRP initiative for Domestic Violence

The Worth Project

A local domestic violence project established within the health sector in Jan 2004 has had great success in encouraging women and men to tell health professionals if they are victims of domestic violence.

Since the project began there have been 454 positive disclosures, leading to 45 cases for court and 4 prosecutions. The project also refers victims to service providers such as the Women's Aid refuge and Victim Support for further assistance and advice where it is required.

Due to the success of the project, a new service has been launched to help children who are experiencing domestic violence. Counsellors work with affected children from ages 5 to 17 years old to talk through their issues and provide support.

 B-Safe Scheme

The B Safe initiative was launched by Worthing Borough and Arun District Council and aims to provide a package of measures to increase the physical security of a victim's home and to reduce the fear of further offences taking place.

Measures could include changing or adding locks, including window and letter box locks, smoke detectors, door and window bars and a door viewer as well as guidance safety planning and installation of a life line unit, which is linked to the Careline Centre providing help and assistance 24-hours-a-day.

This initiative, supported by Worthing CDRP, is not limited to housing association tenants and cold include anybody who is threatened with homelessness due to domestic abuse or race and hate crimes.

People can refer themselves or be referred by an agency such as the Police. For more information and to make a referral, please contact the Housing Team at Worthing Borough Council, using the contact details below:
