AV Vote Referendum

About the Referendum

A referendum will be held on Thursday 5th May 2011 (same day as the local election) to decide on the question below:

At present, the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?

The hours of the referendum will be from 7.00am to 10.00pm. This poll will be combined with the poll for local government election.

Result

The result in Worthing was as follows:

  • Yes : 30.44% (9,476 votes)
  • No : 69.56% (21,653 votes)

Therefore Worthing said No to using the alternative vote system instead.

Nationally the alternative vote system was also rejected with a No vote:

  • Yes : 32.10% (6,152,607 votes)
  • No : 67.90% (13,013,123 votes)
