There are alternatives to fossil fuels to meet our energy needs. Generating energy from renewable energy sources such as the sun and wind can help to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and produces less carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
One of the easiest ways to contribute to the use of renewable technologies is to switch to a green electricity tariff. This is electricity produced from renewable sources, as opposed to fossil fuels.
You can adopt a ‘green supply tariff’ or a ‘green fund tariff.’ A green supply tariff means that the supplier matches all or part of the energy you use with electricity from a renewable source. Green fund tariffs mean that you pay a premium and the energy supplier invests it in new renewable energy developments. For more information contact your energy supplier.
Generating your own energy at home is a rapidly growing industry, technologies are now available that can provide heat for space and water heating, electricity and sometimes a combination of both. They include solar PV (photovoltaic), solar water heating, ground source heat pumps, small scale wind or micro-hydro turbines and biomass heating.
Not all types of renewable system are suitable for every home and the energy produced and installation costs vary but start from around £2500. However, it is important to make sure your home is as energy efficient as possible before installing a renewable energy system. Grants and discounts are available for small scale renewable systems and you should contact the The Energy Saving Trust on 0800 512 012 for further information.
