The National Responsible Drinks Retailing award scheme was launched at the Houses of Parliament in 2004. The Home Office, the Portman Group, the trade press and the drinks industry support it.
The awards are split into various categories:
The criteria for the Public Sector awards relate to measures undertaken by councils to work with the industry to tackle the problems associated with alcohol retailing. It looks at the initiatives adopted to deal with the associated problems. For example, how the partners are dealing with problems caused by large numbers of young revellers entering town centres on weekends.
The focus of the awards is on the co-operation of the authority with organisations such as the police, fire & rescue service, trading standards, pubwatch/clubwatch, their other partners and the trade concentrating on the commitments and innovations they have adopted in the fight against public place violent crime and disorder.
Back in September 2005 Worthing entered the National Responsible Drinks Retailing Award Scheme and received the recognition of being 'highly commended' - one of the top five in the country.
In September 2006 Worthing Borough Council’s Licensing Unit submitted the entry on behalf of the Council and its partners Sussex Police, Worthing Pubwatch & Clubwatch organisations, and all the other stakeholders who work hard together to try and minimise alcohol related problems in the town.
On Tuesday 21st November the Chair of the Licensing and Control Committee Cllr. Jacqui Marsh accompanied by Cllr Graham Fabes (Vice-chair) and Diane Ball (Chair of Worthing Town Centre Pubwatch) attended the awards ceremony at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel where Worthing was awarded Winner in the Local Authority category.
Jacqui Marsh commented after the ceremony
“Worthing Borough Council and its partners Sussex Police, Worthing Pubwatch & Clubwatch organisations, and all the other stakeholders involved in Worthing’s entertainment & night-time economy have worked extremely hard together and have shown determination to continue to do so. The main, and by far most important, result has been a reduction in Worthing’s town centre violent crime figures whilst other similar sized towns in the region have seen steady growth. But, I must say, it is also extremely rewarding to see this hard work recognised nationally by your contemporaries!"
