Making a Complaint

Taxi Driver

Worthing Borough Council through the Licensing Unit is responsible for the licensing of all the taxis operating in the borough. This includes Hackney Carriages and Private Hire vehicles, together with their drivers, and Private Hire operators.

Complaints

Licensed vehicles, drivers and operators can occasionally experience and cause problems. On the rare occasion this happens, the council tries to resolve the issues informally. However, on occasions more formal action has to be taken if problems are on going or serious.

Please be aware that we can only investigate identifiable drivers and vehicles.  Although the vehicle licence and registration number are, (or should be), clearly visible, if you can identify the driver it can be very helpful.  Every driver is issued with an identity badge which has his or her photgraph on it, together with their licence number, and their name in the case of Private Hire drivers.  It must be worn and must be clearly visible while they are working.  Many drivers also now have an additional "dashboard badge" which may be displayed on the vehicle dashboard.  If the driver is not wearing a badge, assume that he or she is not licensed and use another car.

Licensing Unit Officers investigate all complaints regarding licensed drivers and vehicles, and also Private Hire operators.  However, please note that only licensing matters can be dealt with formally. Complaints regarding other matters such as road traffic legislation or criminal activity should be notified to the police or other appropriate responsible authority.  In particular, if your complaint is about anti-social driving, Sussex Police are running Operation Crackdown, which deals specificalyy with such incidents, see www.operationcrackdown.org for more information and to make a complaint.

Information regarding unlicensed cars or drivers in the borough, and unlicensed Private Hire operators, is of special interest to the Licensing Unit, as well as being a Police matter.  Any information regarding unlicensed drivers operating in the borough is essential to ensure the safety of the public and the reputation of the industry. Please contact the Taxi Licensing Unit with any information.

To pass on words of thanks or praise.

Above and beyond the call of duty!

The Licensing Unit, naturally, doesn't want to only deal with complaints.  When a taxi or private hire driver has been especially helpful to you, please let us know about it.

Although the highest possible standards are expected from our drivers, and they usually deliver, if a licensed driver from the borough has performed above and beyond what is expected we do like to know about it.  We would be pleased to pass on your comments and thanks to the driver concerned, if we can identify the driver.
