Applications should be submitted at least two weeks before your current licence expires, or at least six weeks if you also have to obtain a new CRB Disclosure. Do not wait if one element of your application is not yet ready, e.g. you are still waiting to get a medical certificate. Ideally all the paperwork will come into the office together, but it is more important that you get your application in on time. ONCE YOUR LICENCE HAS EXPIRED IT CANNOT BE RENEWED. You would then have to go through the "new licence" process.
If you have applied in plenty of time, but there is a delay of some sort in the administration of the renewal process, you will be allowed to continue working until the renewal decision has been made. If you have put your application in late, you may have to stop working when your licence expires, until such time as it has been renewed.
