Wheelchair Accessible Taxi

Sussex has a larger proportion of people with some ambulant disability than any other county. Worthing is the largest town in West Sussex, and has the highest proportion of people with an ambulant disability in the County. Worthing Borough Council has over the last few years attempted to encourage the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire industries to provide more Wheelchair Accessible vehicles.

Since 2004 all additional new hackney carriage plates have only been issued to wheelchair accessible vehicles.

In 2007 the council decided that all currently licensed Hackney Carriage saloon or estate cars would have to convert to a wheelchair accessible vehicle when the saloon or estate was replaced. This requirement took effect on 1st October 2007. However, in June 2009 this policy was suspended pending a review of the council's policy that is planned to take place on the issue of the Department for Transport's best practice guidance expected late in 2009.

Wheelchair Accessible Hackney Carriages & Private Hire Vehicles available in the borough.

Below is a list of the currently licensed vehicles that are wheelchair accessible with their contact telephone numbers.  It is hoped that in the future, this list will be linked to the database of licensed vehicles, but in the meantime we have to comb the database at regular intervals to produce an updated list, and then transfer that to this site.

If you would like a copy of an updated list as soon as it has been produced, please send an email message to tony.armstrong@worthing.gov.uk asking to be put on the WAV users distribution list. (Sorry, we can only do this by email.)

Latest News (20th August 2008).

Because of the differing requirements for taxis and private hire vehicles, we have now split the vehicle list.  The new list of Accessible Private Hire vehicles is listed below, and will be updated every time the details change.

As yet we cannot update the list of accessible taxis, so the old list is still here, but be aware that we know that it is not completely current.  Please do NOT use the combined list for Private Hire contact details.

Please check back frequently for updates, and epecially if you are looking for a wheelchair accessible Taxi or Private Hire vehicle.

If you drive a wheelchair accessible taxi or private hire vehicle and your contact details are not on the current list, or if your details need to be updated or corrected, please let us know, preferably by email, and we will amend the list straight away.
