About the Service

Rat

As a general rule, it is an individual's responsibility to deal with the pests on his or her premise. Some can be dealt with by homeowners and business owners themselves, using products readily available from retail outlets. However, others need special treatments and it is essential to get proper, professional advice on how to deal with them safely and quickly, without damaging the environment, affecting people's health or causing damage to the property.

Worthing Borough Council's Pest Control Team provides the specialist advice and professional treatments necessary to control a number of the pests that can infest a domestic, or commercial, premise.

The Environmental Health Group's Pest Control Team is part of the Health, Housing & Community Safety Section of the Borough Council. These specialist officers will, under normal circumstances, aim to respond to requests within two working days of receiving your call.

They offer a service to control rats in domestic premises, which is free of charge. They also offer a service to carry out wasp nest treatments and eradicate bed bugs and cockroaches in your home, and also to control mice, subject to a charge for these particular services and dependant on certain conditions.

In addition to offering a pest eradication service officers will be happy to give advice on dealing with pests that are not covered by the service.

Should you find an insect in your home that you are not sure of and would like to know if it is an environmental health pest then we can offer an identification service and advice on treatment if necessary.

A very competitive first class pest control service to business premises in the borough is also provided. The team provides its services to a number of restaurants, hotels, public houses, nursing homes. Many of whom have regular inspections and preventative treatments carried out on a contract basis.

Worthing Borough Council's Pest Control Officers are fully expierenced and trained to the very high standards of the Royal Society of Health.

Prevention - What Can You Do?

When it comes to pest control the best advice you could possible receive is that prevention is far better than a cure. If you are prepared to take a few simple precautions you can greatly reduce the risk of suffering a pest infestation which can be a very unpleasant expierence.

Rodents

  • Avoid accumalations of rubbish in the garden because these are areas that offer harbourage to both rats and mice and where they will then multiply.
  • Their next move will be into your home, so don’t hoard rubbish, take it to the local amenity tip.
  • Whilst the Council believes composting is good environmental practise, please keep an eye on your compost heap. Even if you don’t put food on it rats and mice find the warmth within the heap irresistible and ideal for nesting.
  • Have you checked your air-bricks recently? Check to see if any are broken or if they are level with or very close to the ground. If they are broken then rats may be able to enter, if they are level with or close to the ground there is a chance that mice will gain access.
  • Check round the outside of your house looking for gaps under doors and around pipes or cables that enter the building, holes in exterior walls etc. A simple test is that if you can get a ball-point pen through the gap then a mouse could enter. The solution is to seal gaps and holes in walls, fit a suitable gauge mesh over air bricks and rectify gaps that exist at the base of doors.

Fleas

  • Frequently wash your pets bedding in the hottest wash possible.
  • Take your pet for regular checks by your vet and de-flea on a regular basis.  About once a quarter should be enough.

If you have a pest infestation do not hesitate to contact our Pest Control Service.
