For many years, the Borough Council has provided small grants to charitable and not-for-profit organisations that serve Worthing Borough area.
As a signatory of the West Sussex Compact (2005), a framework of partnership working between the public and voluntary sectors, the Borough Council is committed to assisting smaller voluntary and community groups by collaborating with other local funders on funding criteria and, where possible, combining application processes and forms.
In pursuit of this aim, the Council now pools its small grants fund in the Worthing 'Community Chest'. This is managed by Worthing Community Partnership. The criteria for funding are as follows:
- Only charitable or not-for-profit organisations may apply
- The project for which funding is sought must benefit people within the Borough of Worthing
- Applications for furthering political activities will not be accepted
- The maximum grant for any project is £1000 per year
- Applicant organisations must have a bank or building society account with no less than two unrelated signatories
- Applications for funding over £100 must show evidence of 'matched funding' of 50% of the value of the amount requested (this can be 'in-kind', eg volunteer time)
- Successful applicants will be expected to take an active part in the Community Chest appraisal team in the following financial year
