Asbestos in Housing - Advice and Information

Asbestos was widely used as a building material in domestic houses between 1945 and 1985. If you are proposing to carry out works on your property, it is vital that the correct safety precautions are taken when working in areas where asbestos containing materials may be encountered.

The Control of Asbestos a Work Regulations 2002 introduced a duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises. This duty also extends to building managers who have responsibility for maintenance to the common areas of buildings containing purpose built domestic premises, including halls, stair wells, lift shafts and roof spaces. The Health and Safety Executive enforce these Regulations, which do not extend to the owners of family homes or landlords of converted houses.

The following Websites offer advice and information, which we hope will assist home owners to assess whether asbestos is present in the building, before works are carried out.

Disposing of Asbestos

The Household Waste Recycling Site (Amenity Site/Tip) in Shoreham can accept some asbestos waste.

Please note : the Worthing Household Waste Recycling Site DOES NOT accept asbestos at the moment. [September 2009]
