Worthing is proud to own and manage many Parks and Open Spaces in the Borough, to give enjoyment and pleasure to all ages. A variety of these are available for hire for various events and functions.

For organisations that are non-profit making, these sites are available free of charge for most events for example school fetes, BBQ’s and Picnics etc. The events that incur a charge are Fun Fairs, Circuses, Car Boot sales and commercial displays such as the tent Shows.

In 2009 there were over 85 events held which included the large annual events such as the Worthing Festival organised by the Lions and the Rotary Fair & Carnival. In addition there are the smaller events such as the Broadwater Festival and the Durrington Festival, the Worthing Motor Show and two Camping Shows, Fire Station Open Day and Worthing Horticultural Societies Flower show which are now regular features in Worthing's calendar.

To hire an Open Space to promote or hold an event, you will need to complete an Application Form, Risk assessment form (depending on the activities you intend to put on. You will also need to provide evidence of your Public Liability Insurance of a minimum of £5 million per claim. Should your organisation not have this level of insurance cover, Insurance cover can usually be obtained through most insurance brokers or the Council's Liability Underwriters.

The premium required for the insurance varies according to the event, activities and degree of risk assessed by the Council’s Risk & Insurance Officer. The Council’s Insurance cover is not available for certain events e.g. pop/rock concerts and funfairs.

A minimum of three weeks notice is required for small events. A minimum of three months notice is required for all large events. Please note the Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport must grant all new events at Steyne Gardens permission and your application must be received at least three months prior to your event. Please see our Conditions of Hire for further information.

Worthing’s Parks & Open Spaces are actively promoted as sites for passive and active Leisure and Recreation and lively entertainment is also promoted. Several of our sites have Premises Licences for Public entertainment as required under the Premises Licence 2003. None of our sites have a licence to enable alcohol to be supplied, as the emphasis we have sought to engender is Leisure, Recreation & Entertainment in a family and community environment. Many venues throughout the Town hold alcohol licences and events where alcohol is to be included are encouraged to look to these venues to meet their needs.

Events in and around Worthing can also be promoted here on our website free of charge. For more details on advertising your event, please contact Paula Spencer-Snell on 221437 or email paula.snell@worthing.gov.uk
