Worthing's Play Strategy

Article's Rating

Worthing Borough Council recognises the value of play in helping to meet its objective of making Worthing a town where people want to live work and invest.

One of the core values on which our Corporate Plan is based is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens. To this end I am passionate about ensuring that our youngest citizens are not forgotten.

As a Council we have an enviable record of providing and investing in play areas and equipment. The provision made by the Council is supplemented by provision made by developers and RSL’s. Although provision extends to practical support of activities and programmes on the ground, this Play Strategy is intended to focus solely on play which is defined in Getting Serious About Play as “what children and young people do when they follow their own ideas, in their own way and for their own reasons”. It is about play which is free at the point of delivery, and to which children and young people are free to come and go as they choose.

Worthing Borough Council has, with the help and support of PLAYLINK and input from a Play England, Play Enabler worked with a range of partners and stakeholders to establish a shared vision of what we should seek to deliver in terms of support for play. This shared vision is captured in the comprehensive Play Policy, which we have developed.

This Play Strategy sets out how we will strive to deliver that vision and what practical steps we hope to take to turn vision into reality.
