Good practice guidelines

  • Follow advice from Southern Water with regard to the mains water supply
  • Re-use household water e.g. soapy water (this can help control insect pests)
  • Harvest rainwater using water butts
  • Compost green waste, organic material helps retain water
  • Use mulching materials such as bark, stone, gravel, and slate to help prevent evaporation of water and suppress weeds
  • Select plants that do not require as much water e.g. Geraniums, Rudbeckias, and Gazanias
  • Use water retentive polymer in plantings
  • Only water during late evenings/early mornings
  • Consider sowing half hardy annuals, which are less water demanding during the establishment stage
