Technical Guidance Note 25: Garage Conversions - Wall Treatments
Type A – Timber frame and damp proof treatment.
- Appropriate damp proofing system applied to walls and floor.
- Timber frame set slightly off wall – minimum 75mm x 38mm timbers at 600mm centres built off single course of brickwork.
- Insulate timber frame with material of required thermal performance.
- Finish with 12.5mm plasterboard.
- Insulate floor with material of required thermal performance.
- Finish floor with – minimum 65mm of screed, or tongued and grooved timber flooring.
Type B – Blockwork and insulated cavity.
- Brick course laid 75mm from existing wall.
- 100mm thermal blockwork laid on damp proof course.
- Cavity insulated with appropriate material of required thermal performance.
- Finish wall with plaster, or plasterboard.
- Damp proof membrane applied to floor.
- Insulate floor with material of required thermal performance.
- Finish floor with – minimum 65mm of screed, or tongued and grooved timber flooring.
Type C – Timber frame and clear cavity.
- Brick course laid 50mm from existing wall.
- Timber frame wall – minimum 75mm x 38mm timbers at 600mm centres built on a damp proof course – lined facing cavity with breather paper.
- Insulate timber frame with material of required thermal performance.
- Finish with 12.5mm plasterboard.
- Damp proof membrane applied to floor.
- Insulate floor with material of required thermal performance.
- Finish floor with – minimum 65mm of screed, or tongued and grooved timber flooring.
Type D – Composite board and damp proof treatment.
- Appropriate damp proofing system applied to walls and floor.
- Insulate floor with material of required thermal performance.
- Finish floor with – minimum 65mm of screed, or tongued and grooved timber flooring.
- Spot bond composite plasterboard/insulation sheeting to wall.
(Damp proofing system must be checked for suitability for this use)
