Technical Guidance Note 26: Garage Conversions – Door Infill
Type A – Concrete foundation & cavity wall construction.
- Cut back existing concrete floor.
- New foundation excavated to 1m deep, or to suit site conditions.
- Foundation filled with concrete to same depth as existing foundation, or to suit coursing of brickwork.
- Damp proof course provided 150mm above ground level.
- Floor damp proof membrane lapped with damp proof course.
- Brickwork toothed into existing walls.
- Wall provided with appropriate thermal insulation.
- Wall finished with plaster, or plasterboard.
Type B – Concrete lintels & cavity wall construction.
- Cut back existing concrete floor.
- Two pre-cast concrete lintels inserted below ground level, spanning onto the existing foundations on either side of the original door opening.
- Damp proof course provided 150mm above ground level.
- Floor damp proof membrane lapped with damp proof course.
- Brickwork toothed into existing walls.
- Wall provided with appropriate thermal insulation.
- Wall finished with plaster, or plasterboard.
Notes
These illustrations should not be considered as working drawings.
It will only be considered appropriate to construct new brick and block work off the existing concrete floor if the existing garage was constructed with a raft foundation.
