Worthing has many important areas of historic character and heritage together with sites of archaeological importance and it is vital that the attractive urban character and historic character of the town is maintained.
The town includes 26 Conservation Areas which are designated because they are areas of special architectural or historic interest which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. Details relating to these can be found on the Conservation Areas page.
The Borough also contains numerous listed buildings which are buildings of special architectural or historic interest which are included on a statutory register called the ‘Statutory List of Buildings of Architectural or Historic Interest’. Consent is required for any works to a listed building that would affect its character. To view a the list of buildings within Worthing that have listed status please see the Listed Buildings page.
In addition, the Council has identified a number of buildings and parks & gardens which are of local interest because of their contribution to the character of the area in which they are located. The Planning Policy team is currently preparing a Conservation and Heritage SPD which will collate all relevant information and provide guidance on how valued should be protected and, where appropriate, enhanced. It is expected that this will be available to view here by the end of 2011.
