Worthing’s 'Greening of the Borough' strategy sets out an aspiration to promote local identities in Worthing’s traditional village centres by identifying distinctive local features. The strategy contains a series of recommendations to improve the quality of the landscape in each urban village, and create a sense of 'arrival' at key entry points. The Council wants to introduce initiatives which will reinforce local identity and help people feel more a part of their village.
Following consultation amongst Worthing Council Members, it was agreed that a village sign be erected in the Broadwater 'urban village' using funding awarded by the Coastal West Sussex Partnership, to mark the centre of the neighbourhood and celebrate the historical culture of the local area. Tanya Milne, a students at Northbrook College, created this design which will be hand-crafted by Kyle Swann, a local Sussex blacksmith, and erected on the grass verge outside Cricketers Parade.
The sign will be installed during the week commencing of September 5th 2011, with the official unveiling at 12.00 noon on Friday September 9th 2011.
Further details and photos will be posted here as they arrive. In the meantime, a draft design is available for you to view below. If you have any comments or questions about this project please contact Joanna Malandain, Assistant Regeneration Officer, by email to joanna.malandain@adur-worthing.gov.uk or by telephone on 01273 263333.
A short consultation period amongst the local shops at Broadwater took place in late May and early June so we could gather comments and thoughts from the local community about the new sign. Shopkeepers and customers were asked what they thought about the design and if they had any ideas about the colours they would prefer. A copy of the comments received can be found below:
Here is a selection of photos of the manufacture of the sign.
Lettering is handcrafted from metal and the beginnings of the Church appear.
The shape of the sign takes place whilst blacksmith Kyle Swann and designer Tanya Milne continue to progress the construction.
