Council Tax is a local tax collected by Worthing Borough Council on behalf of the County Council, Sussex Police Authority and for services provided by the Borough Council.

Most domestic properties are subject to Council Tax. There is one bill per dwelling, whether it's a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or houseboat, and whether it's owned or rented.

The explanatory notes leaflet for 2010/11 is available below.

There are further options available from the navigation on the left regarding council tax.

How Council Tax is calculated

Every property in the Borough is allocated into one of eight bands based on the property's estimated value in April 1991.  This independant valuation is undertaken by the Listing Officer at the Valuation Office Agency.

Any appeal against the valuation (and therefore the band) should be addressed to The Worthing Valuation Office, Westmoreland House, Strand Parade, Worthing, West Sussex, BN12 6EA.  For further information, please see the Council Tax charges table below.

The basis of the Council Tax charge is that, in a property occupied by two adult residents, half the Tax relates to the property and half to the people.  Therefore, if there is only one adult resident in occupation a 25% discount may be allowed.  If there are no adult residents and the property is empty, a 100% charge will be payable after any exempt period ends unless the property is furnished when a 90% charge will apply.

What are the Council Tax charges?

The amount of Council Tax you have to pay is dependent on three main factors:

  1. The tax set by the appropriate councils and the Sussex Police Authority
  2. The valuation band that your home has been placed in
  3. Whether you are entitled to any help towards your bill

Please see the "What types of Benefit are there? and the "Housing and Council Tax Benefit" pages for further information about reduing your bill by claiming benefit.

The Council Tax bands and charges are displayed below. To find out which band your property or the one you are considering moving to is currently set at, you can use our Self Service Band Search.
