National Fraud Initiative (NFI) - Council Tax

NFI is a data matching exercise that is carried out by the Audit Commission, that is currently undertaken once every two years with the aim of improving public resources by identifying and preventing fraud.

Worthing Borough Council is one of many organisations that is obliged under section 6 of the Audit Commission Act 1998 to participate in the data matching exercise.  The full Electoral Register will be disclosed to the Audit Commission, and data will be matched from the register against those Council Tax payers who are claiming a 25% single person discount.

The information will then be crossed-checked and any miss-matches that are identified will be passed back to Worthing Borough Council to investigate.

In 2007 it was reported that nationally the Audit Commission identified £111 Million of single person discounts that were attributable to fraud and error, and since its launch in 1996 the Commission reports that over £300 Million has been identified.

Worthing Borough Council and the Audit Commission have a duty to protect public funds and the purpose of the NFI exercise is to prevent fraud and error. All information that the Commission retains is held confidentially, and it operates in compliance with both Data Protection and Human Rights legislation.

F ull details including their code of data matching practice can be found on the Commission's website.

To avoid any discrepancies please make sure your Council Tax and Electoral records are up-to-date.  If you wish to report any changes in your circumstances, please contact Revenues and Benefits or use our Change of Address page.
