Every customer has a duty to notify the Council's Benefit section in writing about any relevant change in their circumstances that may affect their benefit entitlement.  The change should be notified as soon as possible.  If you do not notify a change within one month and you are entitled to more benefit, you may lose some of the extra money.  If you get less benefit as a result of the change then the Council will always go back to when the change occurred and you will have to repay the overpayment.

Examples of changes that must be notified to the Council are:

  • If you move home
  • The end of the your entitlement to Income Support, Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance or Guarantee Pension Credit
  • Changes in your earnings or Tax Credits
  • Any other change in your income or capital
  • When Child Benefit stops for a child or young person
  • If a child or young person leaves or joins the household
  • A change in the number of people living in the household (i.e. people moving in or out)
  • Changes in the status of non-dependants or second adults
  • Changes in the income of non-dependants or second adults, including the start or end of entitlement to Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance or Pension Credit
  • Any change in the amount of rent paid or the services that are included in the rent
  • Any change in landlord or letting agent
  • Any change in details of the person that the Housing Benefit payments are being sent to

This list is not exhaustive and therefore if you are in any doubt at all please tell us about the change as soon as possible.

A leaflet about reporting changes and a form to enable a change to be reported to the Benefit Section can be downloaded from the information leaflets and forms page of the website.
