Recommendations from shoreline management plans and coastal strategy studies have consistently identified a requirement for development of coastal monitoring programmes. Historically the approach to coastal monitoring was generally adhoc, both within individual Coastal Groups and on a regional basis; it was however recognised that some local authorities within the region already have extremely good local monitoring programmes in place. Although there are a few current regional monitoring initiatives, these need to be co-ordinated and integrated within a cohesive regional framework, to maximise use of data and to provide best value.
This is the aim of the Strategic Coastal Monitoring Programme for the Southeast which is being undertaken in a partnership between the Environment Agency , Standing Conference on Problems Associated with the Coastline (SCOPAC) and the South Downs and South East Coastal Groups. The Lead Authorities for each Coastal Group are New Forest District Council, Worthing Borough Council and Canterbury City Council respectively. Each Lead Authority will be undertaking project management and analysis of the data, with some authorities also undertaking data collection. Project data elements include:
The value of the total project is approx. £8.1million over 5 years, with the South Downs Coastal Group expenditure estimated to be in the order of £850,000. This project is fully supported and grant aided by the Department of the Environment, Fisheries and Rural Affairs, (DEFRA).
