Disabled Access Improvements

The Technical Services Section has previously commissioned audits of all Council buildings to establish the extent of work required to ensure compliance with current legislation and particularly the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Specialist consultants appointed by the Council have completed access audits to all of the Council's property. These audits have been undertaken in accordance with nationally recognised guidelines, providing recommendations for improved access. The Council have always taken this issue very seriously and have been endeavouring to improve the facilities for the disabled by providing ramps, induction loops and improved signage, etc.

Although the improvements carried out will be primarily for the benefit of people with disabilities, they will also assist other people as well, such as parents with young children in pushchairs or prams.

The Council have already completed works to a number of key Council buildings to improve access for the disabled.  These include but are not limited to the following;

The Council are also making sure that all works carried out help to improve accessibility for disabled people wherever possible.

Private owners of publicly accessible buildings, such as small businesses etc., are encouraged to have an independent access audit done for their premises. Details of suitable access auditors can be obtained from the Centre for Accessible Environments and further information on the Disability Discrimination Act generally can be obtained from the Disability Rights Commission.
