What To Do In The Event of Flooding

Despite all efforts, flooding can, and does, occur.  Where possible the Council will assist members of the public to cope with the consequences of flooding.  However, there are exceptions as follows:

  • if the property is known to be in the Environment Agency's flood risk zone.
  • if the property has flooded in the past.

In these instances it is expected that the property owner will have taken all reasonable care and taken appropriate measures to protect the property from such events.  You may need to obtain a supply of sandbags to protect your property.  These can be purchased from major builders merchants. Please also see our Emergency Planning and Services section.

If you would like to find out whether your property is near a potential area of flooding the Environment Agency also has a website showing 'What's in Your Backyard?' where using your postcode you can access environmental information for your area.

If your property is in imminent danger of being flooded do not hesitate to contact Technical Services.  One of the Engineers from the Technical Services Section will determine the extent of the problem and arrange the appropriate action as necessary.

For guidance, assistance will be provided for residential properties only.  Conservatories, garages, outhouses, and gardens are specifically excluded.
