Worthing Museum and Art Gallery: Anthony Cooke Retrospective

11 September 2010 – 29 January 2011

This long-overdue retrospective exhibition at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery provides a rare insight into the stunning work of Anthony Cooke (1933 – 2006).

A Royal Academy trained artist whose work is represented in Worthing’s own art collection, Anthony’s love of the sea, fishing boats and the local landscape is reflected in more than 80 oil paintings, watercolours and pieces of personal ephemera kindly lent by his extensive family and friends. This exhibition explores his successful career, charting his numerous artistic accolades, including publications, residencies and the many public and private collectors who have acquired his works.

Cooke was an artist who had strong connections with Worthing and Shoreham by Sea, not only through his art training but also as he lived with his family on a house boat in the 1950s and 60s. He was highly regarded as a lecturer on the Foundation Course at the West Sussex College of Art and Design. Cooke was certainly as character-full as a person as he was an artist. His distinctive style of painting in muted colours and fine brushwork sets this extraordinary exhibition apart from most.

Laura Kidner, Curator for Art and Exhibitions, says:

“Thanks to the generosity of Anthony’s family and friends, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery is very fortunate to be the chosen venue to host the first review of this artist’s work for many years. It is unlikely such a gathering will be seen again for many years – DON’T MISS IT!”

Past Youth Mayor Charlotte gets scrapbook record of her year

Worthing Mayor Ann Sayers presented a unique memento to last years’ 5th Worthing Youth Mayor Charlotte Lister at the Town Hall Parlour on Monday 26 July.

Charlotte and members of the Worthing Youth Council and current Youth Mayor Matthew Badcock were present.

Charlotte says:

"This time last year, I had just been inaugurated as Worthing Youth Mayor 2009/10; I knew that throughout my year I would be a part of something great but what I wasn't anticipating is how much I would learn and see about our community. I have seen some wonderful things that happen in Worthing, which I would otherwise not been a part of. The lengths that some people go to help others is outstanding and I feel privileged that I have had to opportunity to meet and congratulate a large number of them.

"At every single event I attended I witnessed some amazing things that make such a difference to peoples lives; and everywhere and everyone I visited was equally special and important. It is only in my role of Youth Mayor I have fully had the chance to appreciate what a wonderful town we live in and take all of these experiences and put them to use in my future."

The scrapbook, compiled by Shirley Robinson-Viney, East Worthing Youth Worker, records over 100 engagements with young people putting a young person’s perspective on the events. The Youth Mayor

Exercise class on offer for stroke survivors under 60

People who have suffered a stroke and are under 60 are being asked if they would like to take part in an exercise class designed specially for their needs. Adur and Worthing councils and the Sidney Walter Centre are working with the charity ‘Different Strokes’ to encourage younger stroke survivors to take up gentle exercise.

Stroke is the single largest cause of disability in the United Kingdom and 25 percent of the people who suffered a stroke are aged below 60. In Worthing 78 people under 65 will have a stroke each year.

Research has shown that gentle exercise to music improves balance and coordination as well as raising the general level of fitness.

Stroke survivors aged under 60, plus friends and families can come and find out more, meet the instructor and see the gym on Wednesday 8 September at 12 noon to 1pm at the Sidney Walter Centre, Sussex Road, Worthing. The plan is to set up a six week introductory programme following the meeting, if there’s enough demand.

Residents asked to be Chancellor

With both Adur and Worthing Councils facing cuts of £1.5M this financial year and nearly £5.2M by 2013/14 residents are asked to be the Chancellor of the Exchequer and say where they think savings should be made.

Adur and Worthing councils have been working in partnership for some years now helping to deliver substantial savings in the region of £2M and this ‘partnering’ is continuing. But Adur and Worthing still has to save £2.1M and £3.2M respectively over the next 3 years from April 2011.

From 23 August households will get a leaflet through their door setting out the biggest areas of spend for each council. They then have to list their top 3 areas for savings and make suggestions for any income generation. All households are being asked as well whether both councils should look at merging and send their responses by 16 October.

A Facebook page has been set up for each authority as well with the aim of having a bigger and wider debate. Residents can comment on Facebook by searching Adur District or Worthing Borough councils/your chance to be the chancellor.

Adur Leader, Neil Parkin, says:

“This is the first bit of a two-part approach and is to my knowledge the first time something like this has been done. We really want our residents to tell us where they think cuts can be made and where income can be generated as well. We are also asking the big question about both councils merging so it will be interesting to see what the response is!”

Paul Yallop, Leader of Worthing, adds:

“Later in the financial year we are planning to carry out a full budget consultation. So the results of this first part will help us shape the full consultation. We are asking our residents and businesses some big questions and we urge everyone not to ignore the leaflet but take time out to tell us what they think. We are working with the Youth Council who will be in Worthing town centre on Friday 27 August along with councillors. We have a Facebook page as well for each council and hope to get some really good feedback!”

Local swimmers at the Aquarena help raise £2 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care

Worthing locals who took part in Swimathon 2010 at the Aquarena have raised £4,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Swimathon Foundation. They have greatly contributed to Swimathon 2010’s fundraising total of £2million - £500,000 more than 2009.

The Aquarena was one of over 500 pools which took part nationwide. 40 swimmers from Worthing dived into Swimathon 2010, the world’s largest fundraising swim at the Aquarena on the 17th April. For the first time since 2004, more than 20,000 people of all ages and abilities throughout the UK, crawled, breaststroked and butterflyed their way through individual and team challenges of up to 5k, swimming over two million lengths for a good cause. Through the generosity of their sponsors, this is equivalent to raising £1 for every length swum.

Event organiser, Michelle Chittenden from the Aquarena said:

“We are delighted that so many people in Worthing took part and we are thrilled with how much money was raised. Swimathon was a really fun event to organise and it brought out a fantastic community spirit at the pool. Now we’re just looking forward to being part of Swimathon next year and an even bigger turnout!”

Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon President, Duncan Goodhew, commented:

“Swimathon is a fantastic event, not only are we raising millions for Marie Curie Cancer Care, we are also encouraging people up and down the country to have their own Olympic moment and swim further and more often than ever before.”

The fundraising will help support Marie Curie Cancer Care nurses who provide nursing care to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses, at the end of their lives, in a place of their choice, completely free.

Playday at Southwick Recreation Ground

A perfect playday is happening at Southwick Recreation Ground on Wednesday 4 August to mark National Playday. The fun starts at 10am until 3pm with loads of free activities all day for children of all ages. Now in it’s 23rd year playdays are all about celebrating childrens’ right to play.

Adur and Worthing councils wellbeing team have organised the event with support from Brighton & Hove Albion, Impulse Leisure and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. West Sussex County Council have added £400 to make the day a special playday.

For sporty children there’s tennis, bowls, football and more. Enjoy fun fair rides, decorate a cup cake, sow some seeds, have water fun with a fire engine and generally play and have fun.

Get the picnics ready and the children out of the house and come and have some fun playing in the good old fresh air and best of all it’s all free.

Adur’s cabinet member for health, safety and wellbeing, David Simmons said:

"These days children can’t play out in the way we used to when I was a child. Sadly this means they don’t enjoy the same sort of freedom to play and socialise together, an important part of their development. That’s why our parks are so important. They provide not only the opportunity to help children get along with each other, but also to bring parents together for friendship and mutual support. The playday at Southwick looks great fun. Hope to see you all there."

Green Flag Award announcement: Highdown Gardens, officially one of the best UK parks!

With parks providing the perfect location for families during the school holidays, Highdown Gardens in Worthing has been recognised for the 10th year running as one of the country’s best green spaces with a prestigious Green Flag Award today (Wednesday July 28, 2010).

Green Flag Awards recognise and reward the best parks in the country and Highdown Gardens stood out after impressing the judges with its excellent use of green space, well-maintained facilities and high standard of safety and security.

This year has seen the highest number of awards handed out – a record 1200 Green Flags and Green Pennants across the UK compared to 1,013 in 2009. Green Pennants are awarded to parks or green spaces managed by a community or voluntary group.

Only green spaces that are free to enter and open to the public are eligible to win an award through the scheme, which is run by environmental charities Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace.

Paul Todd, Manager, Green Flag Award Scheme, said:

"It's a remarkable achievement that so many parks have successfully reached Green Flag Award status this year. The staff running the parks work very hard throughout the year to ensure their facilities are maintained to a high standard and enjoyed by the entire community."

"As the recession bites and people look closer to home to enjoy the outdoors, the provision of high-quality, free open spaces is of particular importance."

Peter Whish of Worthing and Adur Parks Section, adds:

"The award reflects the hard work and high professional standards achieved by the staff and supported by the Friends of Highdown"

The awards could not come at a better time as GreenSpace’s "Love Parks" week takes place between July 24 and August 1, during which people will be encouraged to enjoy the nation’s parks and green spaces.

Curator’s Choice
31 July – 20 November 2010

Garden party, blackberry picking or Findon Sheep Fair – what would you choose? Worthing Museum and Art Gallery has the answer this summer in their very cool Norwood Gallery! Plus we have an exciting opportunity for local businesses or organisations linked to this special exhibition idea.

The hardworking team of staff and volunteers, from regular museum and art gallery volunteers to historic collections curators; museum manager to customer services; art and exhibitions curators to administration, have been invited to select their very favourite art works from the museum’s celebrated collection and add a comment as to why they like them.

Rob Collins, Museum Operations Supervisor, says:

"We are a relatively small team of staff for the extensive services and facilities we provide to over 55,000 visitors (and reaching a further 50,000 people in the community) each year at the county’s largest museum and art gallery - that’s just 7 full-time and 4 part-time staff assisted by many volunteers. My colleagues manage an art collection that is remarkable in its depth & diversity. Normally, my priority is the display of the artwork rather than its content. It is, then, a real pleasure to have the opportunity to choose those that I particularly like and also to try and put into words why. I hope you agree."

The Norwood Gallery visitors can expect to find a refreshingly eclectic mix of pictures and ceramics by well known and not so well known artists.

Another fraudster doesn’t get away with it!

Rebecca Louise Brown, 36 of Juno Close, Worthing appeared at Worthing Magistrates' Court on 27 July for two offences of failing to notify a change of circumstance in order to obtain benefit under the Social Security Act 1992 totalling £18,425.25.

Brown had been a recipient of housing benefit and council tax benefit since April 2000; and income support since April 2005. As a result of information received by the council in July 2009, a joint investigation was mounted and which resulted in it being established that Miss Brown had a partner living with her from August 2007 to August 2009, a fact she had failed to notify to both Worthing Borough council and the DWP.

She pleaded guilty to the two offences and was sentenced to a Community Order for 12 months, 120 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay a contribution towards the prosecution costs of £150. She is required to pay back the overpayments to both agencies.

The investigation and prosecution was a joint operation between Worthing Borough Council and the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP) - the Council being the lead agency. Worthing Council's Corporate Fraud Team and other agencies liaise on a daily basis to investigate and prosecute benefit fraudsters.

Waves ahead – the 16 year plan for Adur and Worthing is launched

Waves ahead, the new sustainable community strategy, which sets out the priorities and shapes the future vision for Adur and Worthing for the next 16 years is now published.

The plan was written by the Adur and Worthing Local Strategic Partnership, which includes, Adur and Worthing Councils, West Sussex County Council, the police, health, voluntary organisations and businesses. The priorities set have been shaped by the views of local people and a range of evidence.

An exhibition of the plan goes on display at the Adur Council Civic Centre and at the Town Hall in Worthing from Monday 2 August until 13 August. People can come and see what the future holds for the two areas. Waves ahead can also be seen online at www.adurinpartnership.org and www.worthingtogether.org

Waves ahead is an important document because as the public sector faces cuts and tough times it is even more important to ensure money is spent on services the people of Adur and Worthing want.

The plan sets out to tackle challenges in local communities such as, low educational attainment, obesity in young people and unemployment by working in partnership and avoiding duplication of services.

Chairman of Adur in Partnership, Adrian Barritt said:

"Waves ahead is simply us, local people working together for change that benefits all."

Chairman of Worthing Together, Jane Claxton said:

"We are delighted to launch the waves ahead document, which means we can deliver community focused services for Adur and Worthing which have been developed following consultation with local people in our areas."

After months of consultation with the public, businesses, young people and other organisations four priorities were agreed on, under the headings of:

A better place to live, work and enjoy

Better health and wellbeing for all

Learning, training and employment opportunities for all

Staying and feeling safe

Several projects that address these areas are underway or complete with more on the way, such as:

Support for parents through children and family centres

Established a Family Intervention Project to work with vulnerable and problem families

Secured £5million to improve the A259

Off the couch and on the ball - football project for those out of work

Parenting workshops

Provided some great new playgrounds in Adur and Worthing

Activities for children and young people – a huge summer programme of activities and sports for the summer holidays

Don’t miss a thing this summer
Pick up a copy of the Worthing Events Guide

Summer is finally here, and Worthing is playing host to dozens of exciting events. There’s always something happening to ensure Worthing and the surrounding areas are great places to visit over this summer.

Vibrant events such as the Worthing Lions Festival, the Rotary Carnival, the Worthing International Birdman Competition and the RAFA Shoreham Airshow are just some of the major highlights but there’s a lot more besides.

Referee shows yellow card to litterers

Adur and Worthing Councils are getting behind Keep Britain Tidy’s campaign to clean up local streets and divert scarce resources to more deserving services.

Every year, it costs the UK £858 million to pick up the litter that doesn’t make it into a bin. That's £2.3 million a day, 365 days a year. Adur and Worthing Councils spend £650,000 each year - £1,780 per day - picking up after the people who can’t be bothered to bin their rubbish, particularly discarded cigarette ends and fast-food wrappers - money that could fund other services.

Worthing Cabinet Member for Clean and Green, Clive Roberts, says:

"Anyone seen dropping litter, particularly cigarette butts and sandwich wrappers, will be given a football style ‘yellow card’ by one of our litter guys. Although they won’t actually have to pay on that occasion it serves as a warning as if they are caught next time they will get a fine of £75!"

Adur Cabinet Member for Clean and Green, Keith Dollemore, adds:

"In this dire financial climate we just can’t be wasting our resources on picking up litter and the like from thoughtless litter bugs. As the poster for this campaign states we are backing Keep Britain Tidy’s rallying call to ‘get behind us and pick up litter and bin it."

Keep Britain Tidy’s latest campaign is calling on everyone to 'get behind' its rallying cry to clean up England's streets.

The charity’s message is that, in these days of tough spending choices, the fact that we have to spend £858 million on cleaning up litter is a national disgrace – and the solution lies in our own hands.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Phil Barton said:

"At a time when government is having to make very difficult choices about spending, it is ridiculous that councils have to devote a significant amount of their budgets to cleaning up their residents' litter.

"If everyone would just put their litter in a bin, instead of mindlessly dropping it on the floor, we could save millions of pounds a year – and that money could be used to fund vital services for the whole community.

"It is time for the silent majority to stand up and say 'enough is enough', get behind Keep Britain Tidy and Adur and Worthing Councils and show those who think it’s OK to throw their rubbish on the floor – at a cost to the country of £858 million a year – that there is a better way."

Duke of Gloucester to open new Maybridge Community Centre

Work on the fabulous £650K Maybridge Keystone Centre has finished ready for the royal opening this Saturday morning by HRH Duke of Gloucester

When the Duke unveils the plaque he will be following in the footsteps of his father, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester who opened the original boys' club building in the 1950's.

The project has taken six years to pull off and has involved the whole community who have worked hard to create a community and youth centre they can be proud of. The new centre boasts a large, multi-use activities hall, a function hall and meeting room, office space, a kitchen and café area which can all be hired by community groups, organisations and individuals.

"There really is something for everyone at our 'funtastic' open day"

says Trevor England, Chairman of the Maybridge Keystone Club,

"We are looking forward to welcoming the whole community this Saturday for a really great fun day out. You can enjoy displays from Worthing Thunder, Trixies Mini-Beasts and Play Rangers, show off your football and basketball skills and eat lots at the BBQ! I would just like to add too that we are very honoured that the Duke has taken time out of his busy schedule to perform the official opening for us – thank you!"

Funding is still needed for fixtures and fittings to complete the centre’s refit. Tables, chairs and computers for the IT suite are just some of the items required. If any local businesses or organisations can help with funding, sponsorship or donations, please contact Trevor England using the details below.

The brand new facility has been funded partly by Worthing Council and the Community Assets Fund with contributions from West Sussex County Council and the Maybridge Keystone Club.

If you would like to help or want to find out more about the Centre or arrange a visit call: Maybridge Keystone Centre on 01903 240022 or email: tj67@hotmail.co.uk or visit www.mkcworthing.org.

New look Splash Point on its way

Building work is underway on the £500,000 Splash Point ‘cultural’ makeover. Work is expected to be complete by the 18 October with a big Halloween party on the 30 October to celebrate Worthing’s sparkling new seaside attraction.

Splash Point will be a great addition to Worthing's seaside scene and features inviting new seating, lighting, tamarisk trees, a misting water feature and will provide an outside venue for local artists to perform in the open air.

Leader of Worthing Borough Council, Paul Yallop said:

"We recognise the summer is perhaps not the best time to do this work but because of all the government cuts we are not prepared to take the chance of losing the external money from Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) which has to be spent by end of October.

"When it is complete this is going to be a real asset for Worthing attracting locals and visitors and provide a boost to local businesses."

From Edburton Contractors Ltd, Jez Riches said:

"We are very pleased to be the appointed contractor for this project. We will be using some interesting construction techniques and finishes and working with other contractors on the project."

The investment in Splash Point is a result of Worthing Council’s regeneration programme team’s successful bid for funding from the second wave of the Government’s Sea Change programme and is part of the plan to create a buzzing active seafront. Worthing was one of just nine councils chosen to receive the grant managed by the CABE.

Councils to ask residents to take the role of 'chancellor'

Adur and Worthing residents and businesses will be asked to take the role of ‘chancellor’ and contribute to the budget debate in the two areas.

Residents will be asked for ideas on reducing budgets and increasing income in a leaflet which will be delivered with the annual register of electors form In September. The leaflet sets out how the budget is currently allocated and gives people an opportunity to say what they think is most important to them and what is not. The public will also be asked if they would support a full merger of Adur and Worthing councils.

The two councils are faced with making cuts of nearly half a million in Adur and almost £1million in Worthing in this financial year. Further cuts of £2 million and £3.2 million, respectively, could be made by the end of 2013/14.

Following the example of the coalition government a cross party budgetary advisory group has been set up for in each council. They have been tasked with reviewing the budgets, considering the shape of local government for the future and considering more ways to work in partnership.

Leader of Adur District Council, Neil Parkin said:

"We are being totally open about this. Before cuts are made we want to know what our residents think are the most important services to them. And if anyone has some suggestions how we could make money we want to hear from them.

"Everything is up for grabs and we are questioning everything we do. And we want to know if the public would support a full merger of the two councils, if this would mean substantial savings can be made."

Leader of Worthing Borough Council, Paul Yallop said:

"There’s no doubt that we have difficult times ahead and it is important we involve local people so that when we have to make those tough decisions we have a good idea of what is matters to them.

"I would like to reassure people that the new swimming pool in Worthing is going ahead. This is because the pool is a one off capital project which will provide income and reduce the costs of running a pool for years to come. We are not pulling the plug on this one."

Tarring Fun Day goes ahead on a shoestring
Thursday, August 5th from 10am to 3pm

The Tarring Fun Day - organised by Adur & Worthing’s' Safer Communities Team, the Youth Service, local councillors and the Police - is a not-for-profit community event, where local residents get the chance to take part in a range of activities, many of them free or cheap. The day has been organised to provide activities for local people and promote community spirit in the local area.

Activities include face painting, street dance workshops, basketball, a fancy dress competition, urban art, story telling, a local dog show and lots more...

Safer Communities Manager, Jacqui Cooke, says:

"The Tarring Fun Day has been put together for the local community, young and old alike. Worthing Homes put on a similar event 2 years ago and it was very successful. In order to put events like this on we do need a budget, for things like portaloos and print costs for flyers and posters.

"Fortunately a number of local businesses have come forward and made donations- the Worthing Lions in particular, and we are very thankful to for their contribution. Many people are giving their skills and time for this event at no charge and we expect to have a great day - proving that you don’t have to have a lot of money to make a difference."

Local obesity experts launch healthy top tips at outset of first-ever National Childhood Obesity Week

Child obesity experts running an after-school healthy lifestyle programme for families in Adur and Worthing have launched five top tips to help families keep fit and healthy. The healthy top tips mark the inaugural launch of National Childhood Obesity Week.

The MEND Programme run by Adur & Worthing Councils at Southwick Leisure Centre and Downsbrook School in Worthing is a free 10-week healthy lifestyle programme in (area) where children who are above a healthy weight and their parents, learn how to become fitter, healthier and happier whilst having fun.

MEND's five top tips for families on how to stay fit and healthy:

Schedule some time every week when you spend time with your child doing something active

Keep a 'screen time' diary for a week noting how much time you and your child spend watching TV and playing computer games. Start by reducing TV time by 10 minutes each day

Create a boredom-buster box and fill it with ideas for fun activities, including some that can be done as a family. This will encourage the whole family to become more active and will help to reduce screen time

Change from white bread and pasta to wholegrain – this will help you feel fuller for longer

Sit down as a family and eat dinner together. A combined family effort is the key to healthy eating

With one in three children overweight or obese, motivating Adur and Worthing children to be fit and healthy is essential.

Julian Stevens, MEND Programme Manager and local childhood obesity expert for Adur and Worthing Councils, said:

"Making sure your child is a healthy weight can be a struggle for many parents. During National Childhood Obesity Week we want to highlight that making small changes can make all the difference to families who want to become fitter and healthier, for example switching white bread and pasta to wholegrain, and spending more time being active as a family."
