Councillor Charles James - 96th Mayor of the Borough of Worthing 2012-2013 - PHOTO TO FOLLOW SHORTLY

Charles was born in the City of Westminster and spent his formative years in South London where he was educated within the State system.

Upon taking up a career within the Fire Service, he spent 2 years at The Fire Service College in Kent in preparation for that role.

After retiring from the fire service he worked within the railway industry assisting the running of various stations.

Pauline, his wife, is a Worthing girl, they have no children, but they have an extended family throughout the Borough and in Sussex.

Charles has always been interested in local affairs and has served at both Town Council and County Council level.  Whilst a member of the Town Council he was Chair of the Leisure and Tourism Committee and spent 2 years as Chair of the Council.  As a member of the County Council he was Chair of the Rural Area Committee and Vice Chair of the Library Committee.  He also represented the County Council on the South East Tourism Board and the Local Fire Authority.

Charles was seconded to serve on an Environment Agency Advisory Committee.  During this time he was a Governor at 2 primary schools and has served on Crime Prevention Panels, as well as on Local Business Partnerships helping to access funding from Government and European Programmes for regeneration.

Charles is Councillor for Durrington Ward where he is a Member of the Durrington Neighbourhood Panel. On Worthing Borough Council, he has served on the Joint Overview & Scrutiny and Licensing Committees. Charles is also a Member of the Worthing Twinning Association, Sussex Mayors Association and is a Freeman of the City of London.

During his Mayoral year Charles will be supporting the Worthing and Adur Fund in partnership with the Sussex Community Foundation; part of the Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce.
