Champion for Older People

Hello, I’m Councillor Don Allen a Member of Worthing Borough Council.

I have been asked by the Leader of Worthing Borough Council to take particular responsibility for being the Champion for Older People within Worthing.

This is an important role as the Council is committed to improving support and opportunities for older people and is keen to ensure that their interests are represented effectively.

My job is to help and advise older residents, either as individuals or as a group.  I am also very pleased to represent the Council at meetings or briefings and to speak on its behalf where the interests of older people are being discussed.

I will also seek to represent the interests of older people in Council debate, but it is not intended that I should lobby directly on their behalf to avoid potential conflict of interest.

I will brief other Members and the Council’s officers wherever necessary and appropriate.

I will also seek to ensure that officers of the Council brief me when they are preparing reports which affect older people and will support and attend any meetings where I believe my input can be effective.

I believe it is important to challenge ageism and respect diversity so that older people are recognised for their individuality.

I would welcome your thoughts, suggestions and examples of things you are doing which might be of interest to others.

I look forward to hearing from you.
